How do I find the right yoga mat?

You don't need a lot of accessories with yoga. Especially those who are still among the newcomers really only need one thing ...: a good yoga mat! Because thanks to a mat you can do yoga anywhere - even on hard ground!

A yoga mat offers comfort, protection, cleanliness, and also contributes to the "ritual character" of your yoga session - a point that should not be underestimated!

But how do I choose the right yoga mat?

In the world of fitness mats, there is far more choice than meets the eye. And not all are suitable for yoga. Especially the camping mat - very soft and slippery - you should leave in the closet when you try out sun salutations and the like!

It is important to be aware of what you are buying the mat for:

  • What kind of yoga do you do?
  • Do you carry the mat around with you a lot?
  • Would you like to use the mat for Pilates and other workouts?
  • What level are you at?

1.The material

Not only because of the quality but also out of love for our environment, you should definitely take a closer look at the materials our yoga mats are made of!

One of the most common materials is the plastic "polyvinyl chloride" (short: PVC).

The advantage of this mat: non-slip, easy to clean, and inexpensive. The disadvantage: PVC can be toxic - for people and the environment. It is not biodegradable and emits toxic substances when burned!

So make sure that if you choose a PVC mat, it has the independent Oeko-Test Standard 100 seal! Then you can train carefree!

Great more nature-friendly materials are, for example, natural rubber or the recyclable plastic TPE (thermoplastic elastomers)!

2.The thickness / cushioning of the mat

The thicker the mat, the better it absorbs cracks and stresses on joints and bones. Very pleasant, especially for beginners!

But with every millimeter more mat, you also lose traction - which is very important in yoga for a good balance!

Depending on the type of yoga, your level, the surface you practice on, and the sensitivity of your joints, a yoga mat is between 4mm and 7mm thick!

If you still want to do Pilates or other exercises on the mat, it can also be thicker. A Pilates mat is up to 15mm thick!

3.The price

For a really good yoga mat made of great material, you can spend over $100

But do not worry: Especially as a yoga beginner, this is absolutely not necessary!

In conventional sports shops, you can find good mats from  $ 20.

Established brands are of course also a guarantee of quality!

In addition to Nike, Adidas, and Co., you have come to the right place with these brands: Chin Mudra, Lululemon, Manduka, or Jade!

Yoga for beginners at home and without a partner
